Reconnecting Aestheticism and Modernism

Routledge have just published Reconnecting Aestheticism and Modernism, the first collection from the ESF-funded EMMA project based at Université Paul Valery, Montpellier. UL’s Dr Tina O’Toole is the only Irish member of the project, which invited key international scholars from Europe and North America to their first symposium at Montpellier in 2013. The project aims to re-examine historiographical assumptions about two major literary movements, Aestheticism and Modernism, in order to highlight the connections between them, thus revealing the working processes of aesthetic change. Dr O’Toole’s contribution, focusing on avant garde women writers at the turn of the twentieth century, broadens scholarly attention from a few Modernist icons to a wider number of cultural agents. Such writers played a significant, if often unacknowledged, role in shaping the thinking and cultural production of this important period in European literary experimentation.
