Plans to reduce the number of Garda Síochana regions and divisions in order to switch to a more community-based approach to policing in Ireland were announced on the 22nd August. The shake-up will see almost 1,800 extra Gardaí deployed to frontline duties. There was a mixed reaction to the proposed new operating. Some of the concerns included whether this restructuring would result in fewer rather than more gardaí in rural areas? These issues were discussed on Limerick 95FM with Dr Johnny Connolly, of the School of Law.
