Media Commentary on Domestic Abuse

Research on domestic abuse by Dr Susan Leahy (co-director, Centre for Crime, Justice & Victim Studies, University of Limerick) has been included in both the Irish Examiner and the Garda Review in the past week.

Her commentary discusses ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the challenges of implementing reforms contained in the Domestic Violence Act 2018, particularly the offence of coercive control.

“A person’s behaviour has a serious effect on another person if that behaviour puts someone in fear that violence will be used against them or causes the person serious alarm or distress that has a substantial adverse impact on his/her usual day-to-day activities.”
