Aspiring journalists at University of Limerick have helped boost the status of the media courses at UL, after being nominated for numerous national awards.

A number of students have been nominated for the annual sMedia awards which take place at the Aviva Stadium tonight, 19th April.

The Limerick Voice newspaper, produced by 4th year and MA journalism students, has been nominated for newspaper of the year, small college publication of the year, layout and design of the year, and website of the year. Babble magazine has also been shortlisted for small college publication and layout and design of the year.

Simon Bourke has been nominated for journalist of the year, while Mark Boylan and Ger Flanagan are nominated for sports writer of the year. Cian Reinhardt has been nominated for sports photographer of the year. Anna Cullen has been nominated for best editor.

Journalism student Marisa Kennedy who worked as editor of Limerick Voice 2017 said she was honoured to see the newspaper and website represented in so many categories.

“I am delighted that the Limerick Voice newspaper has been nominated for three Smedia Awards with further nominations for our online editor, photos editor and two of our reporters. UL has enjoyed a high degree of success at the Smedias in recent years which is due to the continued advancement of journalism in the university and to those who work tirelessly in the department. I hope Limerick Voice will continue this successful streak at the awards night.”

Head of Journalism Mary Dundon said that the nominations are “a testament to our students’ dedication and talent”.

Congratulating the students, lecturer Kathryn Hayes said “a core focus of journalism education in UL is to prepare students for the world of work”.
