UL researchers organise commemoration of poet Seán Ó Ríordáin

‘Comóradh an Ríordánaigh’, a three-day commemoration of the centenary of the poet Seán Ó Ríordáin’s birth, was held in early December in his native village, Ballyvourney. The event was organised by UL’s School of Culture and Communication, in collaboration with Bríd Cranitch from Ionad Cultúrtha an Dochtúir Ó Loingsigh, Baile Mhúirne.

The commemoration was opened on December 1st by Páidí Ó Lionáird, TG4, and began with a 2-day national conference, ‘Ní Insint Dán ach Bheith’, featuring contemporary poets, academics, and scholars of Ó Ríordáin’s work. A variety of events were held on the actual centenary of the poet’s birthday, December 3rd, including the unveiling of a mural (‘Cúl an Tí’), a lecture by Ó Ríordáin’s biographer (An tOllamh Seán Ó Coileáin), two film screenings (produced by Focus Films, Oonagh Kearney, and local students), an IMRAM show (‘Mo Pheann ag Rince, Tionscadal Sheáin Uí Ríordáin’ by Liam Carson), and a visit to Seán Ó Ríordáin’s grave.
