UL linguists partner in European digital literacy project

The School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics is a partner in a new initiative run by European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML). This new project called “Digital literacy for the teaching and learning of languages” (e-lang) started in January 2016 and will run until December 2018. It is integrated within the larger ECML programme “Languages at the heart of learning”. The project provides a basis for a teaching methodology which integrates digital technologies in response to the shortage of teacher training opportunities in digital literacy across Europe. This will be done through a range of online interactions for teachers, plus a critical use of digital tools and resources to develop language and intercultural skills.

The project expands on previous initiatives, in the area of digitally enhanced teacher training.

On this basis, online training modules will be developed to allow teachers to find out how to:

  • design the various tasks included in this project,
  • help learners to become more efficient in their studies and autonomous as language users thanks to a critical use of digital tools.

The modules will be developed and piloted, before being made publicly accessible at the beginning of 2017. A project workshop will take place in Graz, Austria in October 2017. Through a blended learning approach (mixing online and face-to-face training), teachers will be able to test the modules and develop tasks for their learners.
